Drug information No.118
Note
  • Always check if the drug name on the medicine bag is the same as labeled on your medication.
Eye drops
  • Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
  • DO NOT wear contact lenses while using the eye drops unless otherwise advised.
  • Use the drops in accordance with the printed label or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Eye ointment/gel
  • Wash your hands before using the eye ointment.
  • DO NOT wear contact lenses while using the eye drops unless otherwise advised.
  • Gently pull down your lower eyelid and look up. (Figure 1) Hold the medicine above your eye and squeeze a small amount of ointment (about the size of a grain of rice) inside the lower eyelid. Take care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the tip of the tube.
  • Gently pull up your upper eyelid to cover the lower eyelid and then close the eyes.
  • Blink your eyes or gently massage the eyelids in order to spread the ointment over the surface of the eyeball.
Precautions
  • Take care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the tip of the bottle.
  • Using more than one eye drop/ointment:
    • Two or more drops: If you have more than one drop to put in, wait about five minutes before putting the next drop in.
    • Drop and ointment: If you have been prescribed drop as well as ointment, apply the eye drop first, then wait for five minutes before applying the eye ointment.
    • Two or more ointments: If you are using more than one type of eye ointment, wait about ten minutes before putting the next ointment in.
  • Symptoms such as light sensitivity (photophobia) may occur when the eye drops is used for the treatment of myopia (nearsightedness). The eye drops for myopia is usually used before sleeping.
  • Certain eye drops can cause a temporary blurring of sight or eye sting immediately after putting the drops into the eye. This will normally only be for a short time. If the irritation gets severe or if the eye drops seem to make your symptoms worse, discuss the matter with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • DO NOT share eye drops with other people.
  • Gently close your eyes instead of winking too hard after putting in the eye drops/ointments.
Storage
  • Keep the eye drops/ointments away from light and heat. Some eye drops/ointments (but not all) need to be stored in the fridge.
  • Once you open the bottle/tube, use it up within 1 to 1.5 months. Even the eye drops are stored at well condition; the recommended shelf life of any opened bottle is around 3 months.
  • Discard if the eye drops/ointments have precipitates in it or have changed colors.
※ Please consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
