Eye drops and Eye ointment Patient information
眼藥水及眼藥膏使用須知
Drug information No.118
Note
  1. Always check if the drug name on the medicine bag is the same as labeled on your medication.
Eye drops
  1. Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
  2. DO NOT wear contact lenses while using the eye drops unless otherwise advised.
  3. Use the drops in accordance with the printed label or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Eye ointment/gel
  1. Wash your hands before using the eye ointment.
  2. DO NOT wear contact lenses while using the eye drops unless otherwise advised.
  3. Gently pull down your lower eyelid and look up. (Figure 1) Hold the medicine above your eye and squeeze a small amount of ointment (about the size of a grain of rice) inside the lower eyelid. Take care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the tip of the tube.
  4. Gently pull up your upper eyelid to cover the lower eyelid and then close the eyes.
  5. Blink your eyes or gently massage the eyelids in order to spread the ointment over the surface of the eyeball.
Precautions
  1. Take care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the tip of the bottle.
  2. Using more than one eye drop/ointment:
    1. Two or more drops: If you have more than one drop to put in, wait about five minutes before putting the next drop in.
    2. Drop and ointment: If you have been prescribed drop as well as ointment, apply the eye drop first, then wait for five minutes before applying the eye ointment.
    3. Two or more ointments: If you are using more than one type of eye ointment, wait about ten minutes before putting the next ointment in.
  3. Symptoms such as light sensitivity (photophobia) may occur when the eye drops is used for the treatment of myopia (nearsightedness). The eye drops for myopia is usually used before sleeping.
  4. Certain eye drops can cause a temporary blurring of sight or eye sting immediately after putting the drops into the eye. This will normally only be for a short time. If the irritation gets severe or if the eye drops seem to make your symptoms worse, discuss the matter with your doctor or pharmacist.
  5. DO NOT share eye drops with other people.
  6. Gently close your eyes instead of winking too hard after putting in the eye drops/ointments.
Storage
  1. Keep the eye drops/ointments away from light and heat. Some eye drops/ointments (but not all) need to be stored in the fridge.
  2. Once you open the bottle/tube, use it up within 1 to 1.5 months. Even the eye drops are stored at well condition; the recommended shelf life of any opened bottle is around 3 months.
  3. Discard if the eye drops/ointments have precipitates in it or have changed colors.
※ Please consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
