The full-service Yongkang Emergency Department, opened in 1992 with physicians staffed 24 hours a day, has pioneered the emergency care in Taiwan. In 1996, fully integrated acute and critical care services delivered by a multidisciplinary team of highly experienced professionals were developed to ensure safe, reliable, and quality critical care. The Critical Intensive Unit with more than 100 beds has become the largest critical care service in Tainan.
Chi Mei Hospital began performing transplants in 1999. In addition to kidney, liver, heart, corneal and bone marrow transplants, we are also able to perform multi-organ transplants of heart, liver, kidney and cornea, with a 5-year survival rate of more than 90%. The Memorial Wall, located at the Medical Building III, pays tribute to organ donors who saved and prolonged lives. Since 2016, the space of missing organs has been filled with 3D printed organs that helps family members cope with their loss and grief.
In order to improve healthcare quality and enhance the well-being of patients, da Vinci Robotic Surgical Systems were added to the hospital's surgery unit in 2012, the first in southern Taiwan. The high-tech artificial intelligence ensures minimally invasive surgery and the best treatment for the patient. The High-Tech Medical Care Fund was established by Founder Hsu to help the underprivileged receive high-tech medical care we strive to provide. Since May 2024, Chi Mei hospital has completed 2,500 da Vinci robotic surgeries.
A hybrid operating room, featuring the new ARTIS Pheno angiography system, was built in 2017. The state-of-art system is designed to deliver accurate images for intraoperative guidance and immediate assessment that allow physicians to do complex procedures more safely, efficiently and precisely for the management of multimorbid patients.
In 2018, Chi Mei hospital was the first in Taiwan and second in Asia to install the TrueBeam® radiotherapy system equipped with HyperArc. This advanced medical linear accelerator ensures precise and accurate radiation dose distribution and delivers specifically targeted beams of radiation, offering greater efficiency, accuracy and comfort for patients.
The Precision Medicine Laboratory was established in 2017, with advanced genetic sequencing platforms and the next-generation genetic sequencer that incorporate big data analytic tools to meet the rapid growth demands for new drug development. It assists in the selection of precise treatment options and in providing comprehensive testing services. The Lab has passed the biosafety assessment in 2018 and is a biological safety level 3 laboratory.
Chi Mei hospital has been dedicated to delivering community health care services including long-term care, home care, senior day care, community-integrated services, and dementia community care.
The Chi Grace Hospice Ward emphasizes comfort and dignity by providing quality end-of-life care, holistic approaches, and emotional support to patients and their families. Commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2017, Chi Mei hospital pioneered medical institutions in southern Taiwan to offer advance care planning and advanced directive services by undertaking a pilot project to promote the Patient Autonomy Act.
